Do you feel the same? Do you feel all of the "Learn Guitar" programs available on the web really overwhelming? Don't you think it is crazy? The worst thing is, most of these programs are actually worthless but you can only find how good they are going to be after you've already paid. I've reviewed several programs and found at least two that are good. Learn & Master Guitar is by far the best product I've seen anywhere, if you are serious about really learning guitar and you can afford it, and Jamorama is also quite good if you feel comfortable to take lessons in front of your computer. Here I'm also giving your other two options.

Learn & Master Guitar
Rating: ![]()
Learn & Master Guitar is the King of guitar training products. It contains 10 DVDs, a 108 page book and 5 Jam-Along CDs . It's a bit expensive, but if you're serious about really learning guitar, there just is nothing better. Everything, from the website, to the video quality, to the pro players they use for the Jam-Along CDs, is super high-quality.
Learn & Master Guitar not only provides training in a variety of musical genres but also takes students from entry level all the way through very advanced instruction. The course assignments are straightforward and easy to follow. The instructor presents the lessons in a very natural communication style that makes it easy to learn. I also really enjoyed the Jam-Along CDs. Having a CD to play along with while learning your songs makes the lessons a lot more fun! None of the other courses offer this.
The free support from Learn & Master Guitar after the sale is something impressive. Once you order the course, you can discuss your progress, post questions, and chat with other students at their members-only site . Most of the questions are answered by Steve Krenz, the author of the course, himself. It seems that you can see him on the discussion board almost every day. This is really a huge help!
Highlights:
Extremely High Quality
Very In-Depth: 10 DVDs, 5 CDs, & Book
Expensive, but well worth it

Jamorama is the best of the low-cost, completely computer-based guitar training courses. It is easy and fast to purchase Jamorama from anywhere in the world - you pay and download it - then you own it. This training course is quite extensive and the computer lessons are fairly easy to follow.
Because it has no DVDs or CDs, you will need to sit in front of a computer to learn your lessons. People who use computers everyday like me, may not mind sitting in front of a computer to learn how to play guitar, but some people may feel it somewhat cumbersome and inconvenient to practice in front of a computer every day. Fortunately, Jamorama does come with some very helpful video clips that make the thing easier. That is something many of the other computer-based courses do not have.
Bottom Line: If cost is a factor and you don't mind taking lessons from a computer, Jamorama is not a bad way to go. It is the best of the computer-based Guitar training courses.
Update: Although I stand by my review, it seems some users have disagreed with my assessment. If you have personal experience with the course, good or bad, please take a moment to share it.
Highlights:
Computer-based lessons only
No DVDs or CDs
Best of the Low-Cost, Computer-Based Courses

The Beginner's Guide to Unlocking the Guitar
Rating: ![]()
The Beginner's Guide to Unlocking the Guitar is my next choice. Like Jamorama, it is a downloadable and computer-based training program. It is not nearly as extensive as our other top choices, but it does take a pretty novel approach to learning guitar. One of my concern is that there is no video, just audio lessons with pictures, which I did not find to be as helpful. If you seem to feel difficult learning with the more traditional ways and want to pick up a few songs quickly, The Beginner's Guide to Unlocking the Guitar may be worth a try.
Bottom Line: Although it is not as extensive as my top two choices, my first impressions of The Beginner's Guide to Unlocking the Guitar are fairly good, despite the fact that it does not come with video.
Highlights:
Computer-based lessons only
No video at all
Ok for casual students

Guitar Tutor Pro

Guitar Tutor Pro is another computer-based training program. It includes 3 downloadable e-books which you can print out and the lessons are given in audio files with pictures. You will need to learn your lessons sitting in front of the computer. My major concern with this program is that it does not include any video, which can make things much easier.
As the author of Guitar Tutor Pro said, this course was made in response to the other online courses which, he claims, contain theoretical errors. My understanding is, other online courses teach the easy way, not the right way. Actually, this is true of many of the computer-based downloadable courses, but that may not be a major concern for casual students.
Bottom Line: Guitar Tutor Pro is a nice supplemental course if you want to know more about music theory while learning guitar. The lack of video is a major downside.
Highlights:
Computer-based lessons only
No video at all
Good music theory
